BREEDER EDUCATION

Breeding Pair Education™

Testing the dog matters. Reviewing the pairing protects future generations.

SECTION 01

Why Pairing Review Matters

A healthy dog can still be paired in a way that increases risk for future puppies.

Breeding pair review helps breeders look beyond one dog at a time and evaluate what may happen when two dogs are bred together.

Bronze Crown Pairing™ recognizes the breeder's first major step toward future-generation stewardship: reviewing the pairing before puppies are produced.

SECTION 02

What a Pairing Tool Helps Predict

Pairing tools such as Embark Pair Predictor™ may help breeders review:

  • Predicted genetic disease risk
  • Clear, carrier, and at-risk puppy probabilities
  • Expected litter genetic diversity / eCOI
  • Genetic compatibility
  • Coat color, pattern, and trait predictions
SECTION 03

Disease Risk Comes First

The first thing breeders should review is whether the pairing may produce at-risk puppies for a genetic condition.

For each evaluated condition, a pairing report may show probabilities such as:

  • Clear puppies
  • Carrier puppies
  • At-risk puppies

If at-risk puppies are predicted, the breeder should stop and investigate the condition before proceeding.

At-risk does not always mean the same thing for every condition, but it always means the breeder needs to understand what the risk is.

SECTION 04

Understanding eCOI

Expected litter COI, or eCOI, helps estimate genetic diversity in the planned litter.

In general:

  • Lower eCOI may indicate more genetic diversity
  • Higher eCOI may indicate less genetic diversity

The right interpretation depends on the breed, population, and breeding goals.

The important breeder question is: Does this pairing help protect or improve genetic diversity for future generations?

SECTION 05

Trait Predictions Are Useful, But Not First

Pairing tools may also predict traits such as coat color, pattern, and pigment.

These can be helpful, but they should not be the main reason to approve or reject a pairing.

Health, diversity, temperament, structure, and long-term stewardship should come first.

SECTION 06

Crown & Collar Pairing Review Priorities

Use this order:

GREEN LIGHT

  • No significant at-risk disease predictions
  • eCOI supports or improves genetic diversity
  • No major breed-specific concerns identified
  • Additional breed-specific health testing is appropriate or in progress

YELLOW LIGHT

  • Carrier puppies predicted
  • Diversity is not improved
  • Additional health testing is needed
  • Breed-specific concerns require more review

RED LIGHT

  • At-risk puppies predicted for a serious disorder
  • Significant disease risk
  • Very poor genetic diversity
  • Known breed-specific health concerns
  • Pairing should be paused and reassessed
SECTION 07

Bronze Crown Pairing™ Requirements

A Bronze Crown Pairing™ may require:

  • DNA-tested sire
  • DNA-tested dam
  • Pairing review completed
  • Disease risk reviewed
  • eCOI or genetic diversity reviewed when available
  • Compatibility reviewed
  • Documentation saved
  • Additional breed-specific health testing considered where appropriate

Bronze Crown Pairing™ is not about perfection. It is about documented informed decision-making before puppies are produced.

SECTION 08

Higher Pairing Levels

After Bronze, pairing recognition advances only when both dogs meet the relevant level.

  • Silver Crown Pairing™both dogs meet Silver-level requirements
  • Gold Crown Pairing™both dogs meet Gold-level requirements
  • Platinum Crown Pairing™both dogs meet Platinum-level requirements
  • Platinum Plus Crown Pairing™both dogs meet Platinum Plus-level requirements
  • Legacy Crown Pairing™both dogs meet Legacy-level requirements

This shows a breeder's commitment to future generations, not just individual dogs.

SECTION 09

Important Note

DNA testing and pairing prediction tools are important educational tools, but they do not replace veterinary exams, orthopedic testing, cardiac testing, eye testing, temperament evaluation, breed-specific health testing, or professional review when applicable.
